Fertilizer is a general term for substances and mixtures used in agriculture and gardening to increase the nutrients available to cultivated plants. Between 1905 and 1908, the chemist Fritz Haber developed catalytic ammonia synthesis. The industrialist Carl Bosch subsequently succeeded in inventing a process that enabled mass production of ammonia. The Haber-Bosch process formed the basis for the production of synthetic nitrogen fertilizer.
The raw material for synthetic fertilizer is synthesis gas (also known as syngas) - and this is where Schmidt+Clemens, with its high-quality stainless-steel components, comes in. Syngas from liquid raw materials: Various petroleum distillates, both low-boiling and high-boiling fractions, can be used as the liquid raw materials for syngas. After desulphurization, low-boiling fractions can be reformed using the steam reforming process. This process is an endothermic reaction and is performed on a heterogeneous catalyst. Synthesis gas from gaseous raw materials: The most important gaseous raw material for producing syngas is natural gas, which is reformed using the steam reforming process.
